The University of Western Macedonia may provide scholarships to doctoral candidates based on excellence criteria as a reward for their performance, as well as remunerative scholarships for the provision of work or participation in research and development projects. Scholarships can be funded either from the reserves of the Special Account for Research Funds or from resources of self-funded programs of the University, or from funding of research and/or development programs (which are funded by private, international, and own resources of Article 230 of Law 4957/2022, as well as co-funded projects of the Partnership Agreement for Development Framework, or from grants or donations from legal and natural persons, or from the resources of the Departments.

Candidates:

  • Must have completed their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of doctoral studies.
  • Must not hold salaried positions in the public or private sector, nor receive scholarships from any other provider for the specified period.

Upon invitation, doctoral candidates who meet the terms and conditions can submit an application with the necessary documentation for the granting of a scholarship.

Depending on the source of funding for the scholarships, the bodies responsible for the selection process of the scholarship recipients are defined (e.g., Research Committee, Department Assembly, etc.).

a) Excellence Scholarships

The selection criteria for excellence scholarships are:

  • Progress report/recommendation from the Three-Member Advisory Committee,
  • Research work,
  • Publications,
  • Contribution to the educational/laboratory/research work of their Department,
  • Individual or family financial situation.

b) Remunerative Scholarships

The academic scholar must:

  • Provide work ranging from forty (40) to eighty (80) hours per month at the School or Department where they are enrolled, upon request,
  • Comply with the requirements set by the School or the Department regarding their attendance,
  • Adhere to the deadlines for submitting all documents required for the scholarship disbursement.

If incompatible behavior with the status of the academic scholar is identified, the relevant bodies shall immediately discontinue the scholarship.

Granting Process

The scholarship is paid in installments to the recipient, after written certification, indicating the exact number of hours of attendance. The certification is signed by the Dean of the School or the Chair of the Department where the scholar is enrolled and is stamped by the Secretariat of the School or Department.

Selection Criteria for Remunerative Scholarships:

  • Progress report/recommendation from the Three-Member Advisory Committee,
  • Research work,
  • Publications,
  • Contribution to the educational/laboratory/research work of their Department,
  • Individual or family financial situation,
  • Social criteria (such as orphans, large families, families with three children, serious health reasons, persons with disabilities, single-parent families, student siblings in another city, etc.).

The maximum amount of the remunerative scholarships is up to €650 for 80 hours, which may be adjusted according to applicable regulations.
